Warm-Up - Capture The Flag (8 mins)
SHIELD & PROTECT
• Players can use their arms and bodies to shield and protect their bib.
• Using body contact will give players with a bib the chance to feel where the pressure is coming from.
SLOW TO FAST
• As the area is tight, the player with the bib should recognise where the space is.
• This will give them a chance to accelerate into the space, to get away from pressure.
ESCAPING PRESSURE
• The coach should encourage players to be constantly twisting and turning away from pressure.
• This will make it more difficult for the player attempting to steal the bib, with relevance to twisting and turning with the ball.
KEEPING THE BIB ON THE SAFE SIDE
• Players with a bib should take up a side-on body position, with the bib on the furthest, safe side, away from pressure.
• This will keep the bib out of reach
Ball Mastery - 4 Corners Dribbling (15 mins)
Coaching Points:
Eyes Up: Players should look to keep their eyes up in order for them to be able to see what space they have in front of them and how/what type of touches and turns they need to use as they travel around the area.Keeping their eyes up will also allow them to see the opposition as well.
Dribbling: Smaller touches with the laces will help the attacker to keep the ball close to their body but they may need to take bigger touches with their laces to move into space if it opens up for them to move into. Players should be encouraged to dribble with the ball on both feet using different surfaces of either foot.
Speed: Players need to show good dribbling technique that allows them to cover the ground quickly and are quick to react to the shout from the coach.
Progressions:
- Add a defender in the area that has to try and win the ball from the players travelling with the ball. If they win the ball the swap roles with the other players.
- Also, to progress it further play knock and the last player to get through the gate is out. Play until there is one player left.
Skills - 1v1 Duels (15 mins)
COACHING DETAIL:
TECHNICAL STEPPING ACROSS TO INTERCEPT
• When challenging for a ball played in by the coach, both players should be trying to step across the opposing player.
• This is to get their body between the ball and defender to protect the ball.
BEING COMFORTABLE WITH BODY CONTACT
• The player who gets to the ball first should be ready to face heavy pressure from the defender.
• They should look to keep the ball on the safe side when and where necessary, and use their arms and body to keep the defender as far away from the ball as possible.
SOFT TOUCHES • Players should try to take soft touches when receiving from the coach, or when attacking.
• This should help them keep the ball close to their body when under pressure from the defender.
SEEING THE SPACE
• When initially attacking and after stealing the ball, players should try to see space they can exploit by driving the ball into.
• This will open up goalscoring chances.
TWIST & TURNS
• As the attacker will be attempting to beat the defender under heavy pressure, within a small area, the coach should encourage them to twist and turn away from the defender, while being in control of the ball.
QUICK SHOTS
• When the attacker has faced the defender up in a 1v1 situation, they should try and move the ball, quickly, either side of the defender to get a shot off. • Players should be looking to shoot into the corners of the goal.
