Warm-Up - Dribble Gates (12 mins)

Setup:
This practice takes place in a 20x20-yard area and focuses on improving players' close control, dribbling technique, and decision-making.

  • Set up 10–12 gates using pairs of cones spaced about 1–2 yards apart, spread randomly across the field.
  • Each player starts with a ball.
  • The objective is for players to dribble through as many gates as possible within a set time, encouraging quick movement and awareness.

Key Coaching Points

  1. Close Control:
    • Objective: Players should maintain close control of the ball as they approach and pass through each gate.
    • Coaching Tip: Emphasize small, precise touches to maneuver quickly through tight spaces.
  2. Head Up for Awareness:
    • Objective: Players must keep their heads up to scan the field, identify open gates, and avoid collisions with other players.
    • Coaching Tip: Encourage frequent scanning and planning their next move before reaching the current gate.
  3. Use Both Feet:
    • Objective: Players should dribble with both their dominant and non-dominant foot to develop balance and control.
    • Coaching Tip: Remind players to alternate feet when dribbling, especially when changing direction or pace.
  4. Change of Direction and Speed:
    • Objective: Players should practice quick changes of direction to move efficiently between gates while varying their speed to simulate game scenarios.
    • Coaching Tip: Encourage players to slow down when approaching a gate for control, then accelerate into open space after passing through.
  5. Decision-Making:
    • Objective: Players should decide quickly which gate to dribble through next, prioritizing open gates or those that will help them avoid congested areas.
    • Coaching Tip: Reinforce the importance of planning ahead and being adaptable when a preferred gate becomes blocked.

Progressions

  1. Add Competition:
    • Players count how many gates they dribble through within a set time (e.g., 30–60 seconds). The player with the most gates wins.
  2. Gates with a Partner:
    • Pair players up, requiring them to dribble and pass through the gates together, focusing on timing and coordination.
  3. Defender Challenge:
    • Introduce one or two defenders who attempt to block gates or win possession. Attackers must keep control of their ball while navigating through gates.
  4. Smaller Gates for Precision:
    • Reduce the size of the gates to challenge players’ control and accuracy when dribbling.

Benefits of the Practice

  • Enhances dribbling technique and control.
  • Develops awareness and decision-making in crowded spaces.
  • Encourages the use of both feet and sharp directional changes.
  • Builds confidence in handling the ball under pressure.

Ball Mastery - Control (12 mins)

Overview:
This is a dynamic and free-flowing dribbling activity designed to encourage players to express their individual skills while maintaining awareness of the space and other players around them.

  • Players dribble in a tight area, using both feet to perform turns and control the ball.
  • The coach provides verbal or visual cues (e.g., calling turns, blowing a whistle, or other triggers) to challenge players to think and adapt their dribbling and turning techniques based on the available space.

Key Coaching Points

  1. Praise Good Dribbling Technique:
    • Recognize and celebrate players demonstrating strong ball control, composure, and creativity during the activity.
  2. Use Both Feet and All Parts of the Foot:
    • Players should practice manipulating the ball with different parts of their foot (inside, outside, sole) to develop versatility and precision.
  3. Change of Speed:
    • Encourage players to vary their speed during the activity. Slowing down for control and accelerating into open space simulates game-like scenarios.
  4. Awareness of Space and Others:
    • Teach players to keep their heads up and scan their surroundings between actions to avoid collisions and make better decisions.

Progressions

  1. Dribble Around a Cone:
    • On the coach’s call, players must quickly dribble around a designated cone and rejoin the activity.
  2. Form Groups:
    • When the coach calls out a number, players must stop and form groups of that number as quickly as possible, adding an element of decision-making and teamwork.
  3. Skill Challenge:
    • On the coach’s command, players must perform a skill challenge (e.g., toe taps, kick-ups, ball rolls) before resuming their dribbling.

Benefits of the Practice

  • Improves ball control, turning ability, and creativity.
  • Develops awareness and ability to adapt to tight spaces.
  • Encourages use of both feet and varied dribbling techniques.
  • Builds confidence in individual skills while maintaining focus on the game environment.

This practice keeps players engaged and focused while enhancing their technical ability and decision-making in a fun, competitive setting.

Skills - 1v1s Defending (20 Mins)

Setup:
This practice is conducted in a 35x45-yard area to enhance players' ability to defend in 1v1 scenarios.

  • A defending zone is marked out where one attacker and one defender start.
  • An outside player feeds the ball into the attacker (striker), who attempts to beat the defender and score against the goalkeeper.
  • The defender's objective is to stop the attacker from turning, block the shot, or force them out of the zone.
  • Scoring System: The defender earns a point by winning possession, blocking a shot, or forcing the attacker out of play.
  • Rotation: After each round:
    • The attacker becomes the defender.
    • The feeder becomes the new attacker.

Key Coaching Points

  1. Get Tight Quickly:
    • Objective: Close down the attacker as quickly as possible to prevent them from turning and facing the goal.
    • Coaching Tip: Emphasize the need for speed and balance, ensuring defenders approach under control to avoid being easily beaten.
  2. Maintain Appropriate Distance:
    • Objective: Don’t get so tight that the attacker can easily spin or dribble past. Maintain a distance that allows for quick adjustments.
    • Coaching Tip: Teach players to stay at an arm’s length, ready to react to the attacker’s movement while maintaining pressure.
  3. Use Body Shape to Force Direction:
    • Objective: Position the body to direct the attacker away from goal and toward less dangerous areas.
    • Coaching Tip: Reinforce side-on defending, using the defender’s body to cut off passing lanes and guide the attacker wide.
  4. Timing of Interceptions:
    • Objective: Encourage defenders to anticipate when to step in and make a tackle or intercept the ball.
    • Coaching Tip: Highlight the importance of patience—waiting for a heavy touch or the attacker’s hesitation before stepping in.
  5. Quick Recovery Runs:
    • Objective: If the attacker gets past, defenders must recover quickly and reposition themselves to prevent a shot or regain possession.
    • Coaching Tip: Focus on explosive sprints and tracking the attacker’s movement without overcommitting.
  6. Pass Quality When Playing Out:
    • Objective: After winning possession, defenders should focus on accurate and purposeful passing into mini goals or to a teammate.
    • Coaching Tip: Emphasize calmness under pressure and the ability to make a clean pass to transition from defense to attack.

Progressions

  1. Add Mini Goals for Defenders:
    • After winning possession, defenders must play the ball into mini goals placed outside the defending zone. This adds a layer of decision-making and reinforces composure when transitioning from defense to attack.

This practice builds essential 1v1 defensive skills, focusing on positioning, timing, and recovery, while also enhancing composure and passing quality in transitional moments.

Conditioned Game - Short Passing (20 Mins)

Setup:
This small-sided game takes place in a 20x25-yard area, designed to help Mini Ballers improve their passing and movement.

  • The field is divided into 4 zones, with a mini goal placed in each corner.
  • The game is played as a 5v5 match, with the following objective:
    • The team in possession must pass the ball into all 4 zones before they are allowed to attempt a finish in either of the two mini-goals.
    • If defenders win possession, they take on the same objective.
  • Coaches should remind players which zones they still need to play into and signal when they are allowed to finish.
  • The team with the most goals after a set period wins!

Key Coaching Points

  1. Movement to Create Passing Options:
    • Objective: Encourage players to move off the ball into open zones to provide their teammates with passing options.
    • Coaching Tip: Reinforce the importance of timed runs and positioning to always offer an outlet for the ball carrier.
  2. Quick Ball Movement:
    • Objective: Players should aim to move the ball quickly to avoid defensive pressure and keep possession.
    • Coaching Tip: Emphasize two-touch play and sharp, accurate passes to keep defenders chasing.
  3. Penetrating Passes to Eliminate Defenders:
    • Objective: Encourage players to look for forward passes that break through defensive lines and reach teammates in new zones.
    • Coaching Tip: Teach players to scan for gaps and recognize when they can play a decisive pass.
  4. Recognize Zones to Complete Objective:
    • Objective: Players need to maintain awareness of which zones the ball has already been played into and which remain.
    • Coaching Tip: Help players develop their spatial awareness by encouraging them to scan the field and communicate with teammates.
  5. Communication and Teamwork:
    • Objective: Players should work together by talking and signaling to ensure they complete the zone objective effectively.
    • Coaching Tip: Encourage clear verbal cues ("switch," "space," "turn") and non-verbal signals (pointing, movement) to enhance team coordination.
  6. Accuracy Over Power When Finishing:
    • Objective: When shooting, players should focus on accurate placement rather than powerful shots to increase their scoring success.
    • Coaching Tip: Remind players to keep their composure, lifting their heads before shooting to pick their spot.

Progression

  1. Limit Touches:
    • Introduce a touch limit (e.g., two or three touches) to increase speed and decision-making.
  2. Zone Defenders:
    • Add one defender per zone to make progressing the ball into each area more challenging and encourage movement and passing precision.
